What do I need to start lessons?
You need to be at least 17 years old and hold a provisional driving licence. To apply for a provisional licence, you must complete two forms, (D1 and D750) which are available at your local post office. Send off for your licence in good time, (you can apply up to 3 months in advance) so that you are not delayed once you have made the decision to get started. You are NOT permitted to drive until you have one. Also you must be able to read a car number plate from a distance of at least 20.5 metres, or about 67 feet. If you wear glasses or contact lenses to be able to do this, you must use them when driving. If in doubt, have your eyes tested to make sure.

Should I get some private practice?
We would always recommend that pupils get as much practice as possible as it will increase confidence and make you feel more comfortable behind the wheel. However always ask first as you would need to reach a standard of driving first, where you would not be dangerous! - we have dual controls - your Parents don't!!! You don’t want to scare them off or they'll never offer to take you driving again! On a serious note, your accompanying driver will need to be at least 21 years old and have held a full licence for 3 years. Make sure you display "L" plates when you drive and ensure you have insurance cover. It’s not worth taking the risk!!!

Do I have to have passed my Theory test before I learn to drive?
It is not necessary to have passed your Theory test prior to having driving lessons and in some cases it is advantageous to have lessons whilst studying for your theory test as you will encounter some of the scenarios in the test.

How many lessons will I have to take?
This is the most difficult question to answer as it depends solely on the capabilities and standard of the individual. No pupil will be booked a test date until both they and their instructor are confident that they will pass. The "National Average" to get to test standard is approximately 47 hours with an additional 22 hours of private practice. It must be pointed out that some pupils may need more than this.

Can I book more than one lesson a week?
Yes all lessons are booked in agreement between you and the instructor and therefore the amount of lessons that you have in any given week is your decision subject to the instructor's availability.
